Nebraska Secretary of State Business Search (2026): How to Check Name Availability

For a Nebraska Secretary of State business search, use the SOS Corporation and Business Entity Searches page. You can search by name with Starts With, Keyword, Sounds Like or Exact Match options, or by SOS account number, to see whether a corporation, LLC or other entity already uses the name. If nothing similar turns up, the name is probably available.

Two things set Nebraska apart. A new online business filing system launches December 7, 2026, adding online name availability checks. And trade names (DBAs) must be published in a local newspaper after you register them. Name reservations cost $30 for 120 days.

Fees come from the Secretary of State’s forms and fee information page and Neb. Rev. Stat. § 21-192. Mainstay Filing’s Nebraska LLC cost guide adds up formation and ongoing costs.

1. Go to the Secretary of State’s entity search

Open Corporation and Business Entity Searches. Choose a name search or search by SOS entity account number.

2. Pick the right match type

Start with Keyword (Match All) to find your words anywhere in a name, then try Sounds Like to catch phonetic near-matches. Use Exact Match last.

3. Rule out close matches

Drop LLC or Inc. from your search, since endings won’t distinguish your name from an existing one. Review each result’s status.

4. Request a name availability check if you want confirmation

Under the current system, Nebraska handles official name availability checks by written request (email, fax or mail). The Secretary of State’s name procedures page calls it a complimentary courtesy service that doesn’t guarantee your filing will be accepted. Online availability checks are part of the new system launching December 7, 2026.

5. Plan for the system change

After December 7, 2026, business logins move to business.nebraska.gov, and a Nebraska.gov subscription will no longer be needed to search or file. Bookmarked links to the old search and the Corporate Document eDelivery page may change. Card payments in the new system add $1.75 plus 2.49%, and ACH adds $1.75.

  • LLC: include “Limited Liability Company” or “Limited Company,” or L.L.C., LLC, L.C. or LC; Ltd. and Co. are accepted abbreviations (Certificate of Organization).
  • Distinguishable: the name must be distinguishable from names already on the Secretary of State’s records.
  • Restricted words: the Secretary of State’s name procedures flag Bank (and derivatives), Geologist, Trust, Olympic, Engineer or Architect (and derivatives), Land Surveyor or Surveying, Cooperative (or any abbreviation), and Barber or Barber Shop.
  • Review: if a name is refused, you can ask in writing for review by Business Services legal counsel.
  1. Complete the Application for Reservation of Limited Liability Company Name (Neb. Rev. Stat. § 21-109).
  2. Submit it by mail or in person with the $30 fee.
  3. The name is held for 120 days.
  4. A separate Application for Renewal of Reserved Name is available if you need more time.

If you’re ready to form the company, filing the Certificate of Organization online ($100) protects the name just as well. A reservation covers only the state’s records; it doesn’t create trademark rights or reserve a domain.

The entity search won’t show federal trademarks. Search the USPTO trademark database before you commit. Nebraska also registers state trademarks with the Secretary of State for $110. A federal registration held by a company in another state can still limit how you use a name that Nebraska accepts.

Then check the online side. Namechk shows whether the domain and social media usernames are free, and the domain name generator suggests alternatives.

Nebraska registers DBAs as trade names with the Secretary of State (Neb. Rev. Stat. § 87-210), not with counties.

  • Form: Application for Trade Name.
  • Fee: $100 online or $110 in office; renewal is $110.
  • Term: 10 years from filing.
  • Publication: required. Publish one notice in a newspaper of general circulation where the business is located, then send the affidavit of publication to the Secretary of State within 45 days, or the registration is cancelled (§ 87-219). Filing the affidavit online through eDelivery is free.

The new filing system will add online trade name renewals. An LLC that operates only under its exact registered name doesn’t need a trade name.

Once your name is clear, our Nebraska LLC guide explains formation in detail.

  1. File a Certificate of Organization ($100 online, $110 in office; new business information).
  2. Appoint a registered agent: a Nebraska resident at least 18 years old or a business authorized in Nebraska, whose office matches the registered office (§ 21-113). Mainstay Filing includes registered agent service in its formation package (Nebraska costs); our Nebraska registered agent guide explains the rules.
  3. Get an EIN from the IRS (free).
  4. File the biennial report in odd-numbered years by April 1 (reporting rules); it becomes delinquent June 16, and missing it can lead to administrative dissolution. The Nebraska start-a-business guide covers tax registration.
